The high quality of the first two seasons of this BBC period drama is also evident in 2011's third, which also—unfortunately—is the last. Titular attorney William Garrow (1760–1840), played with suitable intensity by Andrew Buchan, was a barrister who pioneered aggressive defense tactics at a time when the British judicial system was riddled by social, economic, and political favoritism and skewed against the accused. The cases in these four hour-long episodes all testify to his importance in advancing principles that have become integral aspects of Anglo-American jurisprudence, including the insanity defense, support for workers' rights, condemnation of official corruption and torture, and limitations on police power. Although based on actual court records, the treatment necessarily simplifies the proceedings for dramatic effect, but the episodes are hardly intended as documentaries. Integrated with the legal matters is the continuation of Garrow's romantic involvement with Lady Sarah Hill (Lyndsey Marshal), who is intent on winning custody of her infant son from her vengeful ex-husband. The series also portrays the death of one of its best-loved characters in a fashion that conveys the dangers of pursuing justice in the 18th century, even for those who worked at the Old Bailey. Boasting rich sets, costumes, and locations, Garrow's Law is one of the finest BBC productions of recent years, so it's sad to see it end. DVD extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette, a photo gallery, and cast filmographies. Highly recommended. (F. Swietek)
