Meet Ban and Ginji, the recovery team with an almost 100% success rate, and they do "get back" everything, from a tiny cat doll to an abducted daughter. Despite constantly struggling for business, these two young men have a few aces up their sleeves: Ban boasts a supernaturally strong grip and the ability, with a well-timed glare, to force others into a one-minute waking nightmare of their own making. Ginji can generate and control his own electricity, from sparks to lightning bolts. Get Backers is filled with all your favorite stock characters, including the emotionally distant (but always sexy) protagonist Ban and his idealistic to the point of naiveté partner, Ginji, who assume the expected roles of often bickering, occasionally noble heroes helping those in need. On the evil side we have an embittered woman (who has, of course, a past involvement with Ban), accompanied by a deliciously wicked, fey villain with a fondness for cutting repartee (not to mention sweeping coats and a hat to rival the Wicked Witch of the West's). The humor, mostly of the slapstick variety, approaches but never crosses the line into grating, and the animation and direction are both above par. By the third of the five episodes presented in this dual-language first volume, rated 15-up, the series begins longer story arcs that promise more depth. DVD extras include mildly entertaining commentary from the English dub director and actors. [Note: Get Backers, Vol. 2 is also available.] Aud: P. (R. Brenner)
