During its final season, Ghost Whisperer added two touches in a bid for a ratings boost—jumping forward five years, and giving a child to Melinda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and her husband Jim (David Conrad), the latter now a physician at the town's haunted hospital. Just as little Tabitha on Bewitched had supernatural gifts, so is precocious Aidan (Connor Gibbs) his mother's son, with powers prophesied to be even greater than hers. While job number one for Melinda is still helping ghosts reconcile unfinished business in the earthly world so they can “cross over” to the light, this season does take some darker turns, adding to the show's mythology with the introduction of malevolent spirits known as Shadows, as well as the ghost children Shinies who can destroy them. A benchmark is the Hewitt-directed 100th episode “Implosion,” which involves a bomb missing from a hidden munitions dump. Although CBS abruptly canceled Ghost Whisperer, the finale does provide closure, with Melinda and Jim coming to terms with Aidan's powers. Compiling all 22 episodes from the 2009–10 fifth season, DVD extras include a season retrospective, a behind-the-scenes look at the 100th episode, a featurette on Hewitt, a hauntingly bad webisode series, and two games. Given its devoted following, this is recommended for larger TV collections. (D. Liebenson)
