In this anime series set in 1924 in the fictitious Francophonic European country of Sauville, Kazuya Kujo—an exchange student at St. Marguerite Academy—meets Victorique, a mysterious young woman with a doll-like appearance whose connection to the school is not immediately apparent (she never attends classes, but can be found in the school library). Victorique has a knack for solving murder mysteries, and Kazuya teams up with her to investigate a series of disturbing crimes (featuring some graphic imagery). Gosick is a delightful series that is close in spirit to the great British mystery shows aired on PBS's Masterpiece Theatre, featuring loads of clever plot twists and two remarkably engaging lead characters who share a charming chemistry. Presenting the first 12 episodes (of 24) from 2011 in a dual-language Blu-ray/DVD Combo set, rated TV-MA, this is highly recommended. (P. Hall)
