Capitalizing on the excitement for the upcoming Super Bowl XL, Greatest Super Bowl Moments presents highlights from the first 39 games, starting with the Green Bay Packers' 35-10 win over the Kansas City Chiefs in 1967, and ending with the New England Patriots' 24-21 edging out of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2005. Viewers will see Joe Namath accurately predicting that the New York Jets would beat the Baltimore Colts in the third Super Bowl, the Colts' match-up with the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth (also known as the “Blunder Bowl” due to the high number of turnovers), the undefeated Miami Dolphins' “perfect season” wrap-up with a win over the Washington Redskins in the seventh, Lynn Swann's amazing catches for the Pittsburgh Steelers' victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the tenth, and Super Bowl XXXVIII, arguably the best ever, in which the New England Patriots and Carolina Panthers followed a lackluster first half with one of the most exciting second halves of football ever seen. An entertaining ramble down pigskin memory lane, revisiting the dynasties (the Packers, the Cowboys, the Steelers, the San Francisco 49ers, the Patriots) and the NFL greats (Bart Starr, Roger Staubach, Terry Bradshaw, Joe Montana, and Tom Brady, just to mention a handful of quarterbacks), the game footage here becomes—not surprisingly—more sophisticated (and longer) as the program marches towards present day. Still, there's a bit of a highlights-reel-feel to the proceedings that is somewhat offset by an excellent DVD extra: the 45-minute documentary “In Their Own Words: The Super Bowl,” featuring players and coaches reminiscing about key plays (good and bad) seen in the biggest sporting event annually televised. Recommended. [Note: also newly available are the following titles in the Super Bowl Champions Collector's Series (2 discs each, $19.98 each): Dallas Cowboys, Green Bay Packers, Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers, and Washington Redskins.] Recommended.
