The 11th season of Grey's Anatomy revolves around making peace with the past. Early in the show's run, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) lost her mother, Ellis (Kate Burton), an eminent surgeon. Although Meredith knew about Ellis's affair with her colleague, Richard (James Pickens, Jr.), neither Meredith nor Richard knew about the daughter Ellis gave up for adoption (flashbacks to Meredith's childhood thread throughout the episodes). That daughter, Maggie (Kelly McCreary), became a doctor and at the end of the 10th season, she took over as the head of cardiothoracic surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial. Maggie clashes with both Meredith and Richard before all three make their peace with one another. Other conflicts erupt between Karev (Justin Chambers) and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) when both compete for the same board position, and between Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and her prickly fellowship advisor (guest star Geena Davis), who harbors a secret that could end her career. As the doctors attempt to save lives (there's a special emphasis here on neonatal surgery), they suffer their own setbacks, including a difficult pregnancy, a divorce, and the death of a key character (a decision that show creator Shonda Rhimes has defended). On the lighter side, there's new romance, too, as Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) make a connection. Presenting all 24 episodes from the 2014-15 11th season, extras include an extended finale, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and deleted scenes. Although growing a bit long in the tooth and featuring fewer original cast members than ever before, this is a strong optional purchase. (K. Fennessy)
