The 13th cycle of episodes in Japanese TV's long-running Gundam mecha-combat sci-fi anime series will likely confuse newcomers with its tangled mythology wrapped in fancy new weapons, noisy battles, and forbidden/cutting-edge technologies. The hero of the overstuffed ensemble cast is Bellri Zenam, a boy cadet tasked with protecting an important Earth-based space installation in what is ostensibly a peaceful era, some thousand years after the warfare of previous Gundam chapters. When Bellri finds his base attacked by an advanced Gundam battle-mech deployed by rebel "pirates," he manages to capture their fighting machine. Ultimately, the narrative will reveal torturous, top-level intrigues among various human governments and space empires with the aim of returning to ruinous wars of conquest, despite age-old armament-manufacturing taboos and religious precepts meant to prevent history from repeating. And Bellri will eventually go over to the pirates' side and find a potential love interest in their alpha-girl pilot Miss Aida. Compiling all 26 episodes from 2014-15 in a Blu-ray edition, rated TV-14, and presented in Japanese with English subtitles, the series' brand-name appeal makes this a strong optional purchase. (C.
