A smart animated series, Home Movies was introduced on UPN in 1999 but quickly moved over to Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" programming, where it thrived through 2004. Created by Loren Bouchard and Brendon Small (the latter provides the autobiographical voice for the series' eight-year-old hero of the same name), the 13 first-season episodes collected here revolve around the struggles of a sardonic, angst-ridden, fatherless boy to shore up his wobbly sense of personal security while trying to become a famous filmmaker and actor. Adored by a neurotic mom (Paula Poundstone for five episodes, followed by Janine Ditullio) who falls apart in low-pressure situations, Brendon finds relief from school and the unwanted confidences of his soccer coach (H. Jon Benjamin) in the short dramas he tapes with two friends. Home Movies is a very fast, very funny, urbane comedy in which characters routinely talk over one another and the poignant meets the satirical. DVD extras include 10 commentary tracks, interviews with cast and creators, and a couple of short films. Highly recommended. (T. Keogh)
