Although you'll just have to wait a little longer for your dose of Vitameatavegamin ("Lucy Does a TV Commercial," Episode 30), both Volume One and Volume Two of the I Love Lucy: Season One series provide ample jewels from the debut season of one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, built around a red-headed housewife (Lucille Ball) who dreams of appearing on her Cuban bandleader husband's (Ricky Ricardo) TV show--including the "lost" pilot episode, a rather technically crude looking affair (re-shot as Episode 6, "The Audition") that kicks off Volume One. Also on the first disc: "The Girls Want to Go to a Nightclub" (…to celebrate Fred and Ethel's anniversary, but the boys want to go to the fights), "Be a Pal" (in which Lucy tries to get the spark back in her and Ricky's romantic life via the aid of a self-help book), and "The Diet" (Lucy wants a dancing girl slot on Ricky's show, but needs to fit into a size 12 dress first). In addition to "The Audition," the second disc includes: "Lucy Thinks Ricky Is Trying to Murder Her," "The Quiz Show," and "The Séance." Bonus features include original openings (an animated Lucy and Ricky rappelling down the sides of a pack of Phillip Morris cigarettes!), and (on the first disc) an audio featurette detailing the show's origin. Excepting the subpar look of the lost pilot, the video is sharp and clear on all other episodes, and the Dolby Digital 2.0 sound is solid. Highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
