One of the signature musical collaborations of the '60s, the compositions of Burt Bacharach and Hal David as sung by soulful five-time Grammy award-winning chanteuse Dionne Warwick resulted in a string of memorable hits that included "Don't Make Me Over," "Always Something There to Remind Me," "Anyone Who Had a Heart," "Message to Michael," "Walk on By," "I Say a Little Prayer," "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," and--of course--"Do You Know the Way to San Jose." In a bonus 13-minute interview tacked on to this hour-shy 1977 public-television concert--which includes all of the above hits in medleys, as well as the songs "Alfie," "Promises Promises," and a few others--the singer admits that "San Jose" was not her favorite tune (although she is notably mum about her high-profile second career as an infomercial shill for the Psychic Friends Network). Shot in Canada, and featuring backup by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, this Dolby Digital stereo presentation is a mixed bag: on the one hand, most of the songs are incomplete; on the other, however, Warwick is in fine vocal form here and the program does indeed exert a certain amount of nostalgic pull for Baby Boomers who remember spinning those classic Warwick 45s over and over and over.
