An example of train-wreck reality television, Intervention focuses on individuals with sundry addictions, who (incredibly) agree to have cameras follow them around as they dig themselves into deeper and deeper holes. What they aren't aware of is the fact that an intervention is coming soon on the part of family, friends, and a trained individual. In the first of four episodes compiled here, former White House intern Alyson's initial addiction to alcohol spirals into harder drug use. Eventually, Alyson is not only regularly scoring crack cocaine, but also—lowest of lows—stealing morphine from her critically-ill father. Lured into an intervention, Alyson agrees to accompany a doctor to a rehab center; one year later, Alyson looks and sounds like a different person, and is happy to see her relatives again. Not everyone is so successful. Other addicts profiled include Gabe, a genius-I.Q.-level 31-year-old brat hooked on gambling; and Vanessa Marquez, a cast member on the first three seasons of E.R., who is using her residual payments from reruns to finance a shopping addiction. Less compelling are stories of unsympathetic rock star Travis and single mom Sara who are both addicted to crystal meth. DVD extras include follow-up stories for Alyson, Gabe, Travis, and Sara. Optional. (T. Keogh)
