iZombie: The Complete Second Season

The second season of the tongue-in-cheek mystery series centering on zombie assistant coroner Olivia (Rose McIver)—who can channel the memories (and, as a side effect, the personalities) of dead people after she devours their brains—continues to explore the zombie underground of Seattle. While Olivia helps Detective Clive Babineaux (Malcolm Goodwin), who still thinks she is a psychic, the coroner (Rahul Kohli) works to discover a cure for her kind of zombie-ism, which is spreading through Seattle thanks to a new energy drink made from an experimental formula. By now, a lot of people know about the zombie underground, which former zombie Blaine (David Anders) still services with a take-out brain service that he runs out of a funeral home. Meanwhile, Olivia's old fiancé Major (Robert Buckley) is busy hunting for the energy drink mogul (Steven Weber) who would rather keep the whole undead side-effect issue quiet. Loosely based on the Vertigo comic book series of the same name, iZombie features self-aware narration and cheeky sensibility, serving up a mix of mystery, young adult drama, horror conventions, and witty humor that is closer to Buffy than The Walking Dead, although not all of the zombies here are able to maintain control (without a steady supply of brains, any of the affected undead could turn into blindly ravenous monsters). Compiling all 19 episodes from the 2015-16 sophomore season, extras include a 2015 Comic-Con panel featurette, and deleted scenes. Recommended. (S. Axmaker)
