Hosted by CNN's Anderson Cooper, Journalists Killed in the Line of Duty, which was originally broadcast on the Trio network, profiles six international journalists (out of a total of 46) who were killed in the line of duty between January 2002 and April 2003. Each of the six profiles is narrated by a world-class journalist (Dan Rather, Peter Jennings, Tom Brokaw, Walter Cronkite, Christiane Amanpour, and Anne Garrels), who provide riveting accounts of how each reporter died, along with interviews with the journalist's friends, loved ones, and colleagues. The profiles provide a representative cross-section of those who died in the noble pursuit of the truth: Wall Street reporter Daniel Pearl was executed on-camera by Islamic extremists; Italian photojournalist Raffaele Ciriello was gunned down by soldiers during a battle in the Palestinian territories; Philippine columnist Edgar Damalerio was slain by police crossfire after he exposed corrupt local officials; Brazilian TV reporter Tim Lopes covered the drug-infested slums of Rio de Janeiro, and was tortured and murdered by a local kingpin; Ukrainian cameraman Taras Protsyuk was killed by "friendly fire" when U.S. tanks shelled his Baghdad hotel; and NBC correspondent David Bloom suffered a fatal embolism while covering the war in Iraq. Each of these fallen heroes is paid respectful tribute in this documentary reminding viewers that journalists occasionally risk everything for a story. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (J. Shannon)
