Timothy Olyphant stars as a U.S. marshal with a frontier approach to justice in this original FX crime drama spun off from an Elmore Leonard character. Olyphant's Raylan Givens is a cowboy of a lawman who is demoted from his Miami posting after gunning down a drug lord (who drew first, so it was a “justified” shooting), and is sent back to rural Kentucky, the home he thought he'd escaped once and for all. Graham Yost developed the show and scripted the first episodes, bringing Leonard on board as an executive producer, and the author's trademark insightful sensibility infuses the show, from the bad decisions that humanize (and at times sabotage) Raylan, to the complicated relationships that tend to perplex him—including those with his hoodlum of a scheming daddy, Arlo (Raymond J. Barry), and an old buddy, Boyd (Walton Goggins), whose evangelical conversion may or may not be legitimate. Well written, superbly cast, and anchored by the effortlessly magnetic Olyphant, this contemporary western built around family grudges, backwoods meth labs, and interstate crime deals makes for a distinctive and compelling show. Collecting all 13 episodes from the 2010 first season, extras include cast and crew audio commentaries, and behind-the-scenes featurettes. Highly recommended. (S. Axmaker)
