In Jyu-Oh-Sei, the lives of Juno space colony-dwelling twin brothers Thor and Rai are thrown into tumult when their parents are murdered and the siblings wind up being sent to the penal colony on the planet Chimaera, also known as the Planet of the Beast King. The brothers find themselves in a harsh environment, where life is literally based on the every-man-for-himself principle—although there are plenty of rough female prisoners in the mix as well, which Thor discovers the hard way when lady prisoner Tiz sets her sights on him and doesn't take “no” for an answer. In fact, Thor has problems aplenty, since he's constantly defending himself while bulking up in an effort to escape by becoming the new Beast King. Unfortunately, Rai's character is never truly developed and the dramatic narrative is sent somewhat out of whack when the storyline abruptly skips several years. Still, the series lacks the reigning vices of anime (the sexual tension is never misogynist and the plots generally make sense), even if it also lacks some of the genre's virtues, never truly finding its inner wackiness to set it apart from the action anime pack. Compiling all 11 episodes in a dual-language double-disc set, rated TV-MA, DVD extras include an audio commentary. A strong optional purchase. Aud: P. (P. Hall)
