This short-lived 2006 series told an ongoing story in the fashion of 24, unfolding in 13 taut, complex, skillfully developed episodes (only five of which were aired). Kidnapped begins with the kidnapping of teenager Leo Cain (Will Denton), whose wealthy parents (Timothy Hutton and Dana Delany) hire a private investigator (Jeremy Sisto) to attempt a “retrieval” with the aim of protecting family secrets that would come to light if the authorities were involved. But an FBI agent (Delroy Lindo), looking into the separate disappearance of Leo's driver, makes inquiries that eventually entangle all of the participants in a web of deceit. In the best serial tradition, each chapter furthers the main plot while also introducing new facts and situations that add suspense, and while melodrama plays a big part in Kidnapped, the show also boasts solid character development. DVD extras include the behind-the-scenes featurette “Ransom Notes.” Recommended. (E. Hulse)
