Airing on TLC, this popular reality show—a spin-off of Miami Ink—stars Kat Von D, an attractive, statuesque brunette who returns from Miami to her hometown of Los Angeles to open her own tattoo parlor. Although Kat is quite the wild child, she's also the real deal when it comes to her work: the budding entrepreneur quickly attracts a slew of clients, including actors such as Desperate Housewives' Jesse Metcalfe, musicians such as Sebastian Bach, and the usual assortment of freaks and hipsters who dig “body art.” The 13 episodes compiled here from LA Ink's 2007 first season feature a narrative of sorts—depicting Kat's fast-lane lifestyle and her struggle to grow a business while still maintaining her freedom and having fun—with subplots involving her team of tattoo artists: Kim Saigh, Corey Miller, Pixie Acia, and Hannah Aitchison. Fast-paced and hip—like its central figure—LA Ink has obviously struck a cord with youthful wannabes infatuated with the swinging Southern California scene, but this old fogie reviewer found Kat's antics largely unamusing and her narcissism unappealing. DVD extras include a “One-On-One with the Cast of LA Ink” featurette. Not a necessary purchase. (E. Hulse)
