Ah, this is period drama like it's supposed to be: not stuffy or stodgy but powerful, passionate, and alive. Three young women—sisters Iris (Catherine Tyldesley), May (Leanne Rowe), and Ruby (Kerrie Hayes)—struggle to find their life paths in post-World War I working-class Liverpool, where war has changed everything: from the gentle nature of their brother, returning veteran Billy (Daniel Rigby), to new opportunities for women. Created by Heidi Thomas, this eight-part miniseries—which aired on the BBC earlier in 2007—follows the sisters as they cope with their tormented widowed father and damaged brother, while also finding romance. A grand, sweeping, beautifully acted, compulsively watchable saga, DVD extras on this three-disc set include a behind-the-scenes featurette, a photo gallery, and cast filmographies. Highly recommended. (M. Johanson)
