The 2008 season of Lost saw a striking return to form—and some dazzling innovations—that restored a bit of luster to this onetime flagship series' tarnished reputation. Still chronicling the lives of survivors of the crashed Oceanic Airlines Flight 815, Lost in its fourth year depicted ramped-up interactions with the island's original inhabitants—the Others—while also posing an additional threat in the form of intruders headquartered on a nearby freighter. Matthew Fox continued to dominate the large cast as castaways leader Jack Shephard, but Elizabeth Mitchell came on strong as Juliet Burke—a plant from the Others—who joined the survivors during season three and figured prominently in a bizarre romantic quartet including Jack, Kate (Evangeline Lilly), and Sawyer (Josh Holloway). Season four also examined more deeply survivor John Locke's (Terry O'Quinn) connection to the island, and spent extra time with socially awkward physicist Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies) and anthropologist Charlotte Lewis (Rebecca Mader), both members of the freighter's scientific team. As fans know, there's some monkeying around with space and time during these 14 episodes, but it's worth the effort to try to figure out what's going on (which is more than could be said for the third season). Subtitled “The Expanded Experience,” this boxed set includes a slew of DVD/Blu-ray extras, including audio commentaries, deleted scenes, bloopers, and a number of behind-the-scenes featurettes. Recommended. (E. Hulse)
