High-concept series' with dense storylines and trippy metaphysics are hard to maintain, but Lost—despite minor stumbles—kept both its focus and its fans to the end, delivering a final season that wrapped the story as satisfactorily as could be expected. The flashback/flashforward structure heads off into an alternate reality for the characters, presenting them in a world where the pull of the Island never affected their lives, while simultaneously back on the Island they fumble for meaning and direction, with Jack (Matthew Fox) giving up leadership out of frustration over his failures, Sawyer (Josh Holloway) filling the void, and Hurley (Jorge Garcia) proving that he has the strength of his convictions—just a few of the dozens caught up in the story. The journeys and dramatic payoffs and opportunities for redemption provide satisfying character closure for the most part, as well as narrative neatness, while still leaving plenty of mystery. Along with the 16 episodes of the 2010 final season, DVD/Blu-ray extras include the exclusive coda “The New Man in Charge,” as well as audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, and bloopers. Exclusive to the Blu-ray version is a BD-Live accessible “LOST University: Master's Program.” Recommended. (S. Axmaker)
