High school student Shiki, who has never really recovered from some unnamed horrific “accident” years ago and is still beset by private demons and blackouts, has been gifted since birth with the ability to see and cut the “threads” that hold everything together--i.e., he can destroy anything, and therefore wears eyeglasses that protect the world from his abilities. Living in a city plagued by mass disappearances and gruesome murders, Shiki is haunted by a woman he unwillingly killed named Arcueid, who enlists his aid to fight against the mysterious killers. It turns out that Arcueid is a True Ancestor (read: vampire), whose duty is to kill the murderous Apostles (minor league vamps with aspirations of greatness), and she needs Shiki's special talent for destruction. Rated 16-up, this dual-language disc features an extraordinarily good soundtrack that enhances the genuinely spooky animation, but while the story is atmospheric and creepy, it doesn't match the quality of other enigmatic/paranormal anime such as Boogiepop Phantom or Witch Hunter Robin. A strong optional purchase. [Note: Lunar Legend Tsukihime, Vol. 2 is also available, with Vol. 3 slated for release on Feb. 22.] Aud: P. (J. Halsall)
