Life in 1980s Tokyo is good for biker Shogo Yahagi…until a chance meeting with a friend leads him to steal a powerful prototype motorcycle/weapon to escape unknown assailants. Soon he finds himself involved in a dark military plot, a new relationship, and the knowledge that his city is floating in a gigantic spaceship run by a supercomputer named Bahamut, which contacts Shogo through virtual pop idol Eve Tokimaritu in order to enlist his help in fighting alien forces. One of the original Japanese anime series, this newly edited dual-language edition of the 1985 classic revises some of the animation and boasts new English dubbing. Rated 15-up for nudity, adult situations, and violence, DVD extras include an interesting commentary track by the American production team on the history of both Megazone 23 and OVAs (“Original Video Animation") in this country, while liner notes include a helpful character and mecha guide. Granted, this is still a dated production, but for the historically-minded viewer, the three-part Megazone 23 remains a watershed anime title. A strong optional purchase. [Note: Megazone 23, Part 2 and Part 3 are also available.] Aud: P. (J. Halsall)
