Miracles had a brief and well-received run on ABC's primetime schedule during the 2003 season, but the network's coverage of the war in Iraq stalled the series' momentum, and only a half-dozen of the show's completed 13 episodes aired. All are included in this four-disc boxed set, offering viewers the chance to see Miracles' lost potential as a possible heir to The X-Files. Skeet Ulrich stars as Paul Callan, a miracles investigator for the Catholic Church. Disillusioned with his work, Paul takes a hiatus but comes back to check out claims that a dying young boy has the power to heal the sick. While looking into the matter, Paul not only has apocalyptic visions, but is himself brought back from the brink of death by the child, who doesn't survive (thereafter, the boy's ghost pops up intermittently throughout the series to cryptically warn Paul of a coming "darkness"). Enter paranormal investigator Alva Keel (Angus Macfadyen), who invites Paul to join his team to look into such fantastic phenomena as a disappearing commercial jet, an entity-possessed paralysis victim, and the recurring appearance of a spectral girl just before a series of disasters. The stories are all worthy of Mulder and Scully, though the chemistry between this show's principals didn't have time to get truly interesting before the plug was pulled. DVD extras include an interview with series creator Richard Hatem, audio commentaries on various episodes, and deleted scenes. Recommended. (T. Keogh)
