Misaki Chronicles: Second Chances, Volume 1

This sequel to the sci-fi/horror anime Divergence Eve continues right where its predecessor left off (so seeing the original series is key to understanding the events here). Set in the future, where the intergalactic outpost Watcher's Nest is still fighting off their mysterious enemy, simply known as Ghouls, Misaki Chronicles finds the WN military crew trapped in a time freeze, and struggling to figure out how to wrench time back into its usual sync with Earth's. Lyar Ertiana, a Lt. Commander from WN, uses special equipment to travel back and forth in Earth's history, tracking rogue Ghouls and trying to uncover the mysteries behind the time freeze, one of which involves the once and future Cadet Misaki Kureha (seen first as a cadet moving through an alternate timeline, and also as a spirit version of herself as a girl offering cryptic advice and warnings to Ertiana on her quest). The most irritating aspect of this anime is its ridiculous fan service moments, with torpedo-shaped breasts bouncing and women's panties exposed at every opportunity, which is unfortunate since there is a potentially interesting story going on underneath all the jiggle. As it is, however, this three-episode first volume—presented on a dual-language disc, rated TV-14—is only recommended for those who already own Divergence Eve.
