A newlywed architect gains possession of a talking horse. Yes, they absolutely do not make ‘em like this anymore, but what better escape from the onslaught of reality TV than this thoroughbred example of unreality television? Wilbur Post and equine slacker Mister Ed were one of television's oddest couples, but it is a testament to Alan Young's skills as a comedic actor and finesse as a straight man that you absolutely believe Young's genuine friendship and affection for his four-legged costar (voiced by B-western star Allan “Rocky” Lane). Boasting one of television's great theme songs, Mister Ed holds up surprisingly well more than 45 years later, and now after three “best of” sets, nostalgic baby boomers can finally saddle up this beloved series' entire first season—all 26 episodes from 1961—including a curious entry that served as a pilot for an unsold spin-off show starring William Bendix as the hapless owner of a rustic lodge (look for a pre-Beverly Hillbillies Nancy Kulp). DVD extras include an episode audio commentary with Young and costar Connie Hines, as well as a retrospective behind-the-scenes featurette that yields some surprises, mainly (or is that manely?) that the series was inspired by a short story that appeared even before the Francis the Talking Mule movies. Libraries with large vintage television collections will definitely want to add this to their stable. Recommended. (D. Liebenson)
