New York University Professor Richard Brown has been teaching film appreciation courses for over a quarter century, and during that time he's been a frequent if not ubiquitous presence on television—in fact, Brown was conducting extensive one-on-one TV interviews with high-profile stars long before James Lipton came along with Inside the Actors Studio. The four-disc set Movies 101 collects 16 extended interviews, originally broadcast on AMC during 2005-06, with such movie icons as Martin Scorsese, George Clooney, Jon Voight, Whoopi Goldberg, Jeff Bridges, Susan Sarandon, Julianne Moore, Sigourney Weaver, and Daniel Day-Lewis (divided into the categories of “Award Winners,” “Leading Ladies,” “Leading Men,” and “Icons”). Brown himself often comes across as either pompous or obsequious, but he knows how to draw out his subjects, making the vast majority of the interviews collected here well worth seeing. DVD extras include bonus interview footage, exclusive interviews with Brown, and DVD-ROM materials. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (E. Hulse)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
