In Paris, circa 1889, genial 14-year-old inventor and orphan Jean helps circus acrobat Nadia escape from a trio of robbers who are after the Blue Water, a jewel of unknown origin that is Nadia's only link to her lost parents. Their flight eventually lands them aboard Captain Nemo's submarine Nautilus, putting them at odds with Nemo's sworn enemies--the sinister Neo-Atlantis organization--who want the Blue Water to aid in their attempt to resurrect the power of Atlantis and rule the world. Loosely based on Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea--and on an old proposal by Hayao Miyazaki (which explains its resemblance early on to Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky)--this excellent TV series was produced by Studio Gainax, who went on to create the celebrated Neon Genesis Evangelion. Containing the series' first 20 episodes, in which plot is nicely balanced by character-oriented segments (the defiant Nadia, isolated by her pacifist and vegetarian beliefs, is especially compelling), as well as a pair of soundtrack CDs, this dual-language boxed set, accurately rated 12-up (with just a bit of nudity), is a great bargain. Highly recommended. [Note: Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water Collection 2, containing the final five discs of the series, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water--The Motion Picture, and two more soundtrack CDs, is also newly available at the same price.] Aud: P.
