Nicolas Le Floch, a popular character in several contemporary French novels by Jean-François Parot, was brought to French TV in 2008, together with his world of royals and aristocrats in late-18th-century Paris—not to mention their schemes, murderous acts, perverse lifestyles, and the weird kind of justice that was often meted out circa 1780. Le Floch (Jérôme Robart), commissioner of the Paris police, is an ace at reading people, especially the creepy ones with powdered wigs and lots of candelabras who can't possibly imagine the kind of revolution that is (be)headed their way. Le Floch moves among them solving high crimes and misdemeanors, engaging in some swordplay, leaping in and out of bed with bewigged babes, and giving us a wonderful view inside the court of Louis XV and the grand salons of Parisian society. Naturally, Le Floch is also at the forefront of forensics, which is (of course) pooh-poohed by all—except when it gets results. His sidekicks are a loyal inspector and a kind of proto-pathologist who use logic, reason, intelligence, and justice to get their men (and ladies). All of this is anathema to the French aristocracy, and the stories are great fun because of it. For TV fans who long for the golden days of Masterpiece Theatre and baroque BBC productions—as well as admirers of premium TV costume dramas and upscale police mystery series—Nicolas Le Floch will be welcome. Compiling the first six episodes—from 2008-10—this is recommended. (T. Fry)
