Paradise Kiss, Vol. 1

Here's a high school-themed anime without aliens, slapstick, or young women who look like Russ Meyer fantasies. In fact, Paradise Kiss is about as close to real life as anime gets. The center of attention is straight-A senior Yukari and her internal struggles: Yukari's family is pushing her towards a university education and a conservative business career, but a twist of fate gives her the opportunity to model clothing for an offbeat group of students at a local fashion school who've dubbed themselves Paradise Kiss. Initially uncertain about modeling, Yukari quickly discovers her talent and self-confidence on the runway and in front of the camera, while also finding herself attracted to George, the seemingly epicene leader of the fashion school group. In addressing issues of conformity, peer pressure, living up to parental expectations, sexual experimentation, and ephemeral trends in style, Paradise Kiss seems like a nonfiction slice of teen life, and features striking animation (particularly of the transgendered character Isabella—a tall, beautiful, thoroughly enigmatic creation). Presenting the first four episodes on a dual-language disc, rated 16-up, DVD extras include press conference footage, TV promos, and a character art gallery.
