Gilbert and Sullivan's satirical light opera skewering the 19th century Aesthetic movement (think Oscar Wilde and the Pre-Raphaelites) benefits from an ironic 20th century mindset in this opulent, impeccable production, joyously mounted by the Australian Opera Company in Sydney. The tale of two poets in love with a lowly milkmaid has all the standard G&S features, brilliantly executed by a superlative cast. Dennis Olsen is properly effete as the fleshly poet Reginald Bunthorne; Christine Douglas as the milkmaid Patience is sweetly resolute in resisting Bunthorne's alleged charms, and Anthony Warlow, as the handsome hero bard Archibald Grosvenor, has faultless comic timing. Especially notable is Heather Begg as the female heavy Lady Jane, who manages to project her comic and grotesque persona without sacrificing vocal quality--a rare accomplishment. Richly costumed and playing against an exquisite art nouveau set, this company pulls off a performance--presented here in Dolby Digital 5.1 sound--that is sheer delight. Highly recommended.
