This third season of the high-concept action thriller series starring Jim Caviezel as former CIA operative John Reese and Michael Emerson as computer mastermind/billionaire Harold Finch adds another partner to the team—Sarah Shahi as coolly efficient former CIA assassin Sameen Shaw. Season three also turns renegade activist and maverick genius Root (Amy Acker) into a wary ally, and kills off a trusted and beloved colleague, a loss that sends the reliable Reese into a dramatic tailspin. This set expands the surveillance-conspiracy aspect of the show's underlying premise (a supercomputer is hooked up to every camera and communications device on the grid) by introducing a second system that is controlled by a shadowy international organization and sold to the U.S. government as part of an elaborate terrorist plot. Although the storyline is increasingly complex, Person of Interest still delivers standalone, mystery-of-the-week narratives in which the team is sent out to save an innocent (and sometimes not-so-innocent) victim from harm. Despite being action-packed and full of sci-fi-type technology, the series is defined by the characters and their loyalty to one another. The end of this sequence goes in directions most viewers would not have predicted, suggesting big changes for season four. Compiling all 23 episodes from 2013–14 on DVD and a Blu-ray/DVD Combo set, extras include an episode commentary, behind-the-scenes featurettes, and a 2013 Comic-Con panel presentation. Recommended.
