Season two of the HBO reality series Project Greenlight, co-created by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and producer Alex Keledjian, serves up another intensive tutorial in how movies really get made in Hollywood. Over the course of the 13-episode series, the sometimes painful competition results in a winning screenplay (Erica Beeney's The Battle of Shaker Heights) coupled with a winning director (actually two: the team of Efram Potelle and Kyle Rankin), after which the clock starts ticking on getting the film made with little money and less time. The most interesting backstage dramas take place during pre-production, when Potelle and Rankin discover that--without any track record--a lot of powerful and more experienced voices start making decisions for them regarding the cast, locations, essential crew members, etc. Taking viewers through the actual shoot on The Battle of Shaker Heights (and more miseries during post-production, when careers hang in the balance over the film's final cut), Project Greenlight: The Complete 2nd Season is a fascinating series that demystifies (for better or worse) the film production process for those considering going into the biz. This three-disc boxed set includes a special edition of The Battle of Shaker Heights (with a jump-to-scene feature linking scenes to background material, and directors' commentary), as well as deleted scenes from the series and filmmaker bios. Recommended. (T. Keogh)
