The biblical story of Exodus is examined in light of some recent scientific research in this slickly-produced Discovery Channel documentary, which goes to great lengths to trumpet--repeatedly--the potentially provocative nature of its conclusions. The starting point is archaeologist Kent Weeks' discovery of a skull during the excavation of a hitherto unknown tomb in Egypt's Valley of the Kings. Speculating that the remains might be those of Amun-Her-Khepeshef, the eldest son of Pharaoh Rameses the Great, reported in scripture as having died in the final plague (the death of the firstborn) inflicted upon Egypt to secure the release of the Jews from bondage, Weeks further noted that the evidence of trauma to the head suggests that the Mosaic account must be substantially revised, and turned to modern forensics in an attempt to verify his hypothesis. Rameses pursues answers to Weeks' questions in a typically breathless fashion, and in the end promises--also typically--more than it can deliver. Still, even without reaching definitive solutions, the process of searching includes interesting material--such as the accomplishments of Rameses' reign--and visits to many fascinating locales. Featuring historical recreations to complement the modern investigations, this is--ultimately--a solid if unexceptional work of popular history. DVD extras include a “making-of” featurette. A strong optional purchase. Aud: P. (F. Swietek)
