The Canadian-produced ReBoot is notable as the first entirely computer-animated television series. This DVD brings together the initial two seasons, which were broadcast on ABC from 1994 to 1996. The action takes place inside a computer in the community of Mainframe, populated by a mixture of anthropomorphic beings and curious entities that look like high-tech monsters. Heroic Dot Matrix and her brother Enzo fight the nefarious Megabyte, with a hacker named Mouse running about to add to the confusion. Viewers of a certain age may enjoy a sense of nostalgia in the mentions of old-time video games, along with the scripts' witty parody of the era's computer industry. And careful listening yields some funny references to classic science-fiction films and TV shows. However—and this is a big stumbling block—the animation is clearly antiquated. Today's youngsters, who are more accustomed to sophisticated CGI productions, might find ReBoot boring, but older techies who recall the glory days of floppy disks should find some fun here. Compiling all 23 episodes in a four-disc set, DVD extras include crew audio commentaries. A strong optional purchase. (P. Hall)
