Adultery never seemed so civilized, romantic, and funny as it does in Reckless, the winning 1997 British Masterpiece Theatre miniseries from the prolific pen of Paul Abbott (Clocking Off, Shameless). Robson Green (Touching Evil, also written by Abbott) stars as Owen, a young surgeon who moves to Manchester to take care of his ailing father (David Bradley). While applying for a job as a surgical registrar, Owen meets management consultant Anna (Francesca Annis), who is a few years older, and lightning strikes: each is knocked out by the other's wit, intelligence, and good looks. Romance follows, but--as bad luck would have it--Anna is married to Owen's flinty and paranoid new boss (Michael Kitchen), making for a particularly dangerous mix of love and work. Granted, this all sounds like a B-movie potboiler, but Abbott successfully mines a vein of comic humanity and all the characters emerge as sympathetic. Also included in this handsome looking five-disc set is the equally engaging, two-hour follow-up, Reckless: The Sequel, in which Owen and Anna get ready for the altar--though not without more complications. Highly recommended. (T. Keogh)
