The 13 episodes of the 2005 season continue the saga of Engine 62, a New York City firehouse in which the firefighters continue to cope with job-related stress and post-9/11 fears about their work. Denis Leary stars as Tommy Gavin, a not-particularly-noble fireman whose personal failings—including a dependency on painkillers—have resulted in a separation from his wife Janet (Andrea Roth). His comrades include Chief Jerry Reilly (Jack McGee), handsome but dumb Sean Garrity (Steven Pasquale), and closest confidant Franco Rivera (Daniel Sunjata), among others. This year's shows find Tommy still hurting inside but working toward redemption and seeking reconciliation with his wife, something he is poised to do in the final episodes—“Happy” and “Justice”—until a wave of tragedies strike Engine 62, culminating in a disastrous, multi-alarm blaze. A well-written series with sharply drawn, realistic characters, Rescue Me is authentic both in spirit and in detail, and one of the most compelling shows on contemporary TV. DVD extras include six behind-the-scenes featurettes, 35 deleted/extended scenes, a blooper reel, and a sneak peek at the third season. Highly recommended. (E. Hulse)
