Of all the profane words bandied about over the course of Roast of Denis Leary: Uncensored's decidedly un-PC 99 minutes, the two you won't hear are: Bill Hicks. The roasters of comedian and actor Denis Leary could have really drawn some blood by referencing the controversy over whether Leary co-opted the late Hicks' righteous angry man persona, but the dais is stacked with Leary's close friends, so instead we get the usual Friars'-type putdowns about the comedian's career, acting abilities, and Irish heritage (and when all else fails, there are references to gay sex). Much of this is rudely hilarious, and it may well be worth the price of purchase just to hear Christopher Walken, in a taped testimonial, call Leary “a delicious muff puff.” Gilbert Gottfried also earns best in show honors as the voice of Leary's Irish wolfhound. Another standout, if only because he doesn't utter one swear word, is Leary's priest. Oddly enough, the weakest part of the roast is Leary's own rebuttal (included on this DVD in the broadcast and uncut versions), which tends to ramble and is a little too inside for the room. Optional. Aud: P. (D. Liebenson)
