Robert Klein was the first standup comedian to appear on HBO, giving the fledgling premium service a cool, cutting-edge voice that set it apart from the blander fare dominating commercial networks at the time. The pairing obviously took, since he's remained a staple on HBO ever since. This four-disc set showcases eight specials filmed over a 30-year period—from Klein's initial 1975 performance at Haverford College through a 2005 routine titled after his memoir The Amorous Busboy of Decatur Avenue. The programs demonstrate that Klein—who has remained a sharp, observant commentator on ordinary life and contemporary events—was a pioneer of modern situational comedy as well as a master of topical humor. Viewers will also delight in his penchant for musical mimicry, courtesy of a surprisingly strong singing voice and nimble harmonica technique (the colonoscopy song in the 2000 special—presented in the style of an easy-listening romantic ballad—is a gem), and each show ends with a different version of his famous “I Can't Stop My Leg” routine. DVD extras include a 2007 interview with Klein, who discusses his career and points out earlier comics (most notably Lenny Bruce and Jonathan Winters) who were major influences. Highly recommended.
