Brad Pitt narrates the six-part PBS-aired documentary Rx for Survival, which chronicles the most important breakthroughs in medicine while at the same time making the point that public health is at a crossroads. Diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis, all but eliminated in developed countries, still account for millions of deaths in the Third World, while other viruses such as Ebola, West Nile, HIV/AIDS, and bird flu pose great dangers even in medically sophisticated countries, thanks in part to the appearance of “superbugs” that have thus far proven resistant to modern medicines. The series takes a guardedly optimistic view—pointing out that previous pandemics were eventually stopped in their tracks by the development of powerful vaccines and antibiotics, together with an emphasis on proper sanitation and nutrition. But viewers are also reminded that—given the increased speed of transportation throughout the world—communicable diseases can travel anywhere in a matter of hours. Effectively arguing that the solution to these health problems lies in a renewed commitment to public health infrastructure, combined with tireless campaigns to raise funds for poverty-stricken countries unable to protect their own citizens, Rx for Survival offers a clarion call to action, reminding us that our future health is at stake. Individual episodes include “Disease Warriors,” “Rise of the Superbugs,” “Delivering the Goods,” “Deadly Messengers,” “Back to the Basics,” and “How Safe Are We?”, backed by a handful of DVD extras such as an interview with former President Jimmy Carter, additional comments from experts, and materials for educators.
