Based on a comic book created by Steve Purcell, this Fox Kids-aired wacky cartoon series revolves around the adventures of Sam, an anthropomorphic dog clad in traditional private-eye garb (right down to the snap-brim fedora), and his partner Max, a hyperkinetic rabbit-like creature, who call themselves “freelance police” and zip around the world in search of mysteries to solve. Fast-paced and action-packed, their exploits offer ample diversion for young viewers but can also be enjoyed by parents thanks to Purcell's edgy, irreverent humor and frequent asides that will sail over the heads of most kids. Compiling all 13 episodes from the lone 1997-98 season, Sam & Max: Freelance Police boasts beautifully stylized animation and inventive stories that move with lightning speed. DVD extras include an interview with Purcell, three Fox Kids-aired animated shorts, an original animated Sam and Max short, a featurette on the video game company Telltale Games, a game demo for Sam & Max: Ice Station Santa, and more. Recommended. (E. Hulse)
