Sasami: Magical Girls Club is yet another spin-off from the popular Tenchi Muyo! series, but unlike the earlier spin-off Magical Girl Pretty Sammy, this one pokes only the gentlest of fun at the magical girls genre, instead playing it straight for the most part. The familiar characters are back with personality traits intact, but are considerably younger here and drawn in a cuter style. Sasami—arguably the most popular character of the Tenchi Muyo! series—is a fifth grader capable of small feats of magic, who is encouraged by her parents to hide her abilities. But Sasami soon meets others with supernatural powers like hers, and—under the tutelage of Cooking Club teacher Miss Washu—becomes part of a secret magical girls club that eventually journeys to a world where witches still practice magic and live with non-magical humans called Storytellers. Of course, things are not quite as nice or as wonderful as they initially seem…but the girls will learn that in the next season. Inoffensive and sweet, this two-disc set compiling all 13 episodes from the first season focuses on the friendship between the five magical girls, all of whom have different but complementary personalities. Presented on a dual-language set, rated TV-PG (for some strong adult flirting), this series is likely to appeal to Tenchi Muyo! and other magical-girl-series fans. Recommended.
