This high-concept Canadian series—a cross between a typical hospital drama and Ghost—was picked up for summer broadcast by NBC in 2012, but the network aired only 10 of the initial 12 episodes before canceling it (the last two are included in this set). Erica Durance stars as Alex Reid, a physician at Hope Zion Hospital in Toronto and the fiancée of chief surgeon Charlie Harris (Michael Shanks). In the opener, the couple suffer a car accident on the way to their wedding, and Charlie slips into a coma. Alex and her colleagues at Hope continue their work, not realizing that Charlie's soul or aura (or whatever) is prowling the halls, watching them, conversing with other comatose or deceased patients, and occasionally making contact (however imperfectly) with the woman he loves. As the season approaches its close, Alex pushes to resuscitate Charlie—against the wishes of his ex-wife—after which Charlie finally awakens, but not without lingering side effects. Saving Hope is hardly must-see TV, but it offers an interesting twist on a familiar genre (even though NBC canceled the series, CTV ordered a second 18-episode season, which will presumably eventually follow the first to DVD). Extras include cast interviews, and behind-the-scenes footage. A strong optional purchase. (F. Swietek)
