"Secret...agent man. Secret...agent man. They've given you a number, and taken away your name." (And what would that number be? Why, #6, of course!) Patrick McGoohan stars as Her Majesty's Secret Service agent John Drake in one of the most popular British espionage series ever, Danger Man (which became Secret Agent when the series--with a new title sequence and a hit theme song by singer Johnny Rivers--began a U.S. run in 1965). With a sense of humor as dry as his martinis, McGoohan's Drake makes The Saint, and even James Bond, pale in comparison, as he crosses the globe slipping into (and effortlessly out of) trouble, armed only with his unwavering sense of right--and an array of technologically advanced gadgets that would make even Q jealous. And though the connection is still a matter of some debate, many argue that when John Drake was "forced into retirement" he turned up in another BBC classic series, The Prisoner. For anyone who enjoys sharp, well-crafted thrillers, and especially for fans of that latter series (and who isn't?), this 2-disc, 6-episode first-of-many set is sine qua non. Highly recommended. (S.
