HBO's groundbreaking series came to a close with the eight 2003-04 episodes collected in this three-disc boxed set, and it definitely went out with a bang (pun unintended) rather than a whimper, as the four major characters faced their respective destinies. A breast cancer scare forces Samantha (Kim Cattrall) to reevaluate her life, if only temporarily, while Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) finds herself growing closer to a Russian artist (Mikhail Baryshnikov)--a flippant, arrogant man who's been around the block but who nonetheless manages to captivate the romance-loving writer. Meanwhile, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) focuses on the impending arrival of her baby, and Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) settles down with Steve (David Eigenberg), unaware that more changes await her. The final eight episodes nostalgically revisit earlier situations and characters, building to the inevitable finale--a sensational two-parter that left the show's fans breathless (and more than a little sad to see it all end). One of the sitcoms that changed sitcoms forever, Sex and the City didn't wear out its welcome; in fact, it went out on something of a creative high, and a more fitting end to the girls' six-year odyssey could hardly have been imagined. DVD extras include commentaries on four episodes by executive producer Michael Patrick King, three alternate endings for the finale, and deleted scenes. Highly recommended. (E. Hulse)
