Many have probably never even heard of this short-lived series (a total of 20 episodes were aired in 1990-91), but She-Wolf of London turns out to be a surprisingly fun mix of gothic horror, modern sensibility, and romantic sparring. Created by Mick Garris and Tom McLoughlan, this first-run syndicated show is part Beauty and the Beast and part Kolchak: The Night Stalker, with a sense of humor right out of The X-Files. Kate Hodge is sexy and smart as American graduate student abroad Randi Wallace, who is bitten by a werewolf on the Moors in England. Neil Dickson costars as her British professor and partner in supernatural sleuthing, Ian Matheson, who is both attracted to and intimidated by the forthright Yank. The late-night sexiness often gives way to more screwball energy and tongue-in-cheek humor, but there's a definite romantic spark in this series that boasts a good balance between monster-mash mystery and lighthearted adventure. Although the characters moved to Los Angeles for the final six episodes, and the show was renamed Love and Curses, neither change earned the series a second season, which is a shame. Just waiting to be rediscovered by genre fans, this is recommended. (S. Axmaker)
