The long-running anime TV series Crayon Shin-chan is a phenomenon so Japanese that American audiences would have difficulty fully appreciating its soul and humor—so licensor Funimation Entertainment took a different tack. Where the Japanese original is crude, the new English-dubbed version is vulgar; where the original verged on family-oriented, the revamped Shin Chan is definitely not for kids. Essentially, Shin Chan retains all the quirky original animation and basic storylines, but the dialogue has been rewritten from the ground up. The show revolves around the misadventures of five year-old Shin, who still drops his drawers and performs his humorous Elephant Dance, but the jokes are fast, furious, and all-out, and what is lost here is any empathy for the series' rogue's gallery of kindergarten characters and the adult supporting cast. Of course, this fits right in with the primetime cartoon sensibility of shows like Beavis and Butt-head (it's aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block) and should appeal to a similar crowd, or even some fans of the original. Rated TV-MA for strong language, sexual innuendo, and comical nudity, this English-only set compiles 13 first-season episodes (each consisting of three short segments), as well as DVD extras such as an original Japanese episode, a single-episode audio commentary, cast auditions, original storyboards, and outtakes. A strong optional purchase. [Note: Shin Chan: Season One, Part 2 is slated for release on Sept. 16.] Aud: P. (L. Martincik)
