When a spaceship appears in the sky followed by the arrival of a giant robot-like hero bent on destroying it, humanity finally has proof that aliens exist. But life goes on pretty much as usual for middle-schooler Hajime Murata; in fact, when the soft-spoken, unflappable, and handsome new transfer student Muryou Subaru shows up wearing a school uniform, this event causes just as much talk (in 2070, students don't wear uniforms anymore--though little else seems to have changed). After witnessing Muryou and student council vice president Kyoichi dueling with telekinetic powers, Hajime uncovers secrets involving a Galactic Federation and the mysterious power of Shingu--which in turn make him the target of an alien spy. Although Shingu has solid moments of action, the show boasts more of a subdued and leisurely charm, and Hajime is a kindhearted and angst-free protagonist. The animation and character designs are good in this first of five dual-language discs bundled with a 12-page booklet featuring useful story and cultural notes. Right Stuf rates the series 7-up, but that should perhaps be raised by a few years due to some minor obscenities. Recommended. [Note: Shingu: Secret of the Stellar Wars, Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 are also available, with Vol. 4 slated for release on Sept. 27.] Aud: P. (S. Raiteri)
