This groundbreaking series, created by Alan Ball (American Beauty), showed no drop in quality as the third season opened; if anything, 2003's 13 episodes brilliantly expanded upon themes and characterizations established in previous years. The initial show finds the venerable undertaking firm of Fisher and Sons now renamed Fisher and Diaz, with former “gofer” Rico (Freddy Rodriguez) asserting himself rather forcefully. Nate (Peter Krause) and Lisa (Lili Taylor) try to make a go of their relationship, but his dalliance with Brenda (Rachel Griffiths) precipitates a split-up that has tragic consequences. Another Fisher scion, David (Michael C. Hall), encounters romantic difficulties when outside pressures affect his partnership with Keith. Late in the season, the entire family is shocked when matriarch Ruth (Frances Conroy), decides--after a whirlwind courtship--to marry George Sibley (James Cromwell in a recurring guest-star role). All in all it's a tumultuous year for the Fishers, whose travails make for uncommonly gripping drama thanks to Ball and such talented directors as actress Kathy Bates (who shows remarkable talent in her outings behind the camera). DVD extras include audio commentaries on selected episodes, a featurette, three deleted scenes, and trailers. Recommended. (E. Hulse)
