This penultimate season of the popular FX-aired drama about an outlaw motorcycle gang in a small Southern California town pits Jax Teller (Charlie Hunnam), now president of the chapter, against his stepfather and former leader, Clay (Ron Perlman), who resists Jax's attempts to extricate the group from the drug and gun-running business. The series began with the outlines of a Shakespearean tragedy, and it is coming full circle as the once idealistic Jax launches elaborate plans that leave bodies in his wake, put family and allies in danger, and remake the power landscape around him. When DA Tyne Patterson (CCH Pounder) goes after Jax's wife, Tara (Maggie Siff), she starts making plans to remove her sons from Jax and the club—bringing on another kind of conflict. By the end of this season, two of the central characters are dead and one of those deaths sets Jax off on a mission of revenge. Jimmy Smits and Peter Weller appear in regular roles this season, while Walton Goggins makes a memorable two-episode appearance. Sons of Anarchy has grown from a cult hit into one of the channel's most popular offerings. Compiling all 13 uncut episodes from the 2013 sixth season, extras include episode commentaries, “Anarchy Afterward” discussions for select episodes, behind-the-scenes featurettes, deleted scenes, and a gag reel. Recommended. (S. Axmaker)
