Superheroes and Smurfs, the Jonas Brothers and Kanye West, reality TV and Fox News: all receive the South Park treatment in the 2009 13th season of the crudely animated Comedy Central show built around the misadventures of four foul-mouthed fourth-graders: Stan, Kyle, Eric, and Kenny. Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone once again serve up a smart and clever blast of sharp (and hilarious) social satire, operating as equal-opportunity farceurs who take on excesses and absurdities on both the right and left sides of the political spectrum. Actually, this collection is less politically topical than usual: yes, Glenn Beck is a worthy target, but more often the episodes deal with topics such as purity rings, Somali pirates, and the death of Michael Jackson—all of which are aggressively lampooned. Presenting all 14 episodes uncensored, DVD/Blu-ray extras include seven deleted scenes and a tour of South Park Studios. Sure to be popular, this latest set from the long-running series is recommended. (S. Axmaker)
